- Initially discovered 4 eggs on this plant which is a new growth after being cut back about a month ago. 3 were observed as 1st instars. 2 in 2nd instar. This lone surviving 5th instar monarch caterpillar was observed returning from leaf litter to feed around 5pm for a couple minutes before walking back into the leaf litter and climbing onto a twig about 6inches away from the milkweed plant. He/she has been motionless on the twig for 1.5 hours, and increasingly limp with droopy antennas.
