- I looked at 22 common milkweed plants. There was one 5th instar and one egg. Milkweed plants are mixed in with other species of plants and the grass around the plants is cut short to keep a trail. There were two shorter milkweed plants (5" and 7" tall) on the mowed back portion of the trail. Other insect species seen: aphids, two katydids/grasshoppers, one red milkweed beetle
