- I looked at 22 common milkweed plants. Out of the plants I looked at, there were four eggs and one instar. Two of the eggs were on a shorter milkweed plant (about 6" tall) that was in the middle of the walking trail. I also saw one empty monarch egg shell on a milkweed leaf. There were two monarch butterflies that flew by, but I couldn't tell if they were male or female. One of the monarchs had very muted coloring. Milkweed plants are mixed in with other species of plants and the grass around the plants is cut short to keep a trail. Other insect, etc. species seen: ant, aphids, oleander aphids, snail, spider, leafhopper, katydid/grasshopper
